Fra Nuvole e Vento: Gente di Civita Between Clouds and Wind: People of Civita Photographs by Brian Stanton
March 4 through May 7, 2024, the exhibition was featured at The Consulate General of Italy in New York City.
Fra Nuvole e Vento: Gente di Civita, an exhibition of recent work by American photographer Brian Stanton, captures the spirit of the people who call Civita home.
Brian has been photographing the town and surrounding valley since 2016, immersing himself in the community while building rich relationships with the remaining residents. “The people of Civita have collaborated with me so enthusiastically on this project. It’s been remarkable to experience,” Stanton says, “It is indeed their story.”
Though Civita may seem like a place where time has stopped, Stanton’s photographs reveal the vibrant human spark that still animates the community.
The exhibition also showcases the striking landscape that surrounds Civita. Printed in evocative black and white tones, the images invite the viewer into the drama of the region’s deeply fissured volcanic stone ridges and arid clay valleys. They underscore the role Civita’s precarious geology has played in developing its unique culture.
The exhibition was on view from September 2021 through June 2022 at Palazzo Alemanni, Civita di Bagnoregio. An extension of the exhibition remains on view at Casa Civita in Bagnoregio, by appointment casacivita2019@gmail.com.
The exhibition is made possible with support from the Consulate General of Italy in New York, the City of Bagnoregio, the Region of Lazio, Casa Civita, and the Columbus Citizens Foundation. Additional support provided by Paolo e Noemia d’Amico Winery.
